Unique & Unusual Madeira International Airport or "Funchal" Airport in Portugal

Madeira International Airport or Funchal Airport is a unique and unusual airport, located near Funchal, Madeira in Portugal.
It’s runway is too short that makes the landing a tricky task ever for highly experienced pilots.
The basic reason it its size is the surrounding mountains.

After an accident in 1977 which 131 people died when a Boeing 747 failed to stop at short runway after landing, the authorities extended the runway by 200 meters.
Later Funchal Airport won the Outstanding Structures Award in 2004 by IABSE (International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering) for its unique runway expansion project.
